Zane Trace students spreading cheer and gifts to nursing home residents

Middle School Student council members from Zane Trace are excited to help seniors this Christmas season.

CHILLICOTHE — The Gift an Elder program is once again returning to Ross County as a way to give back to the elderly who may be forgotten about this holiday season.

The program was started four years ago by a Zane Trace Middle School student Mariska Wax, who wanted to help others. She put her plan into action after noticing the many drives in the community to collect items for different populations rarely helped those in nursing homes.

Wax has since moved on from the middle school but teacher Dennis Foreman keeps the program going as he said the cause touches his heart. Every year the student council helps spread the word about this fundraiser and every year Foreman said it gets bigger and better.

Items being collected include but are not limited to soap, lotion, blankets, gloves, socks, puzzle books, stationery supplies, decorations and snacks.

Many of the student council members are excited to collect donations and give back, they were also excited to learn the nursing home they are collecting for, Signature HealthCARE, is open for visitors. This means students will be able to visit those who receive the gifts and sing Christmas carols for them.

"We have the ability to help people out," said Foreman to the students. "We are going to do things that change this world."

Melanie Hatfield, activities director at Signature HealthCARE, called the program wonderful and a blessing. The nursing home currently has more than 50 residents who would love to be remembered this time of year. Foreman hopes that students and community members will be able to raise enough for everyone at Signature.
